Samuel did not move when Montenegro’s voice came through the front door.

For one second, the boy was back in the lawyer’s office, small again in the chair, listening to a grown man say that love could be sorted into two cars.

Samuel wondered what had happened to Guillermo.

Samuel looked at Elias.

When Dora died, she left them her books, her satchel, and a note tucked into Abigail’s ledger. It said she had spent her life looking for the house, only to learn that the house had been looking for them.

Samuel kept that note in the steel box.

Many years later, he stood on the porch at sunset with his grandson beside him. The boy was eight and had Tomás Moreno’s eyes, which meant he also had Samuel’s, and perhaps Abigail’s before them. Down in the parlor, Elias was telling a new arrival a wildly improved version of the night they climbed the cliff. In his version, the creek was wider, the storm worse, and Samuel braver.

Samuel let him have it.

The Pacific turned orange, then purple.

The old foghorn sounded from Puerto de Almas.

Once, that sound had meant absence.

Now it meant the lights would be checked, the soup would be stirred, and the front door would remain unlocked for whoever had been told there was nowhere left to go.

Samuel touched the brass compass in his pocket. It still did not point north.

It had never needed to.
