My wife put divorce papers in front of me on a Tuesday morning, and for the first time in twelve years, I did not perform.
That was the part Vivian did not understand.
Performance had been the language of our marriage. We had performed at benefits beneath white tents in Southampton. We had performed at holiday dinners where my mother arranged flowers by height and my father measured happiness by silence.
