The paper on the piano bench had three blank signature lines.
That was the detail I remember first.
Not Victoria’s face.

Not Rosa on the floor.
Not even Lily’s eyes, though those came next and changed the shape of my life.
I remember the paper because it looked so ordinary sitting there, bright white against black lacquer, as if cruelty had dressed itself up as office work.
I had come home early because a merger meeting fell apart after ten minutes.
No one expected me at the estate before dinner, including Victoria.
The house was too quiet when I walked in.
Quiet was normal there, but this was different.
It had a bruise inside it.
I heard one short sound from the east parlor, not a scream, not even a cry, just the small hard noise of a body meeting marble.
Then silence.
I moved before I understood why.
The east parlor held the grand piano my mother had loved.

There were flowers near the window that Victoria had ordered for the engagement brunch.

My name sounded polished in her mouth.

I looked at the bench and saw the document.
Across the top, in Victoria’s handwriting, it said the child had climbed onto the piano unsupervised and fallen without adult contact.
Below it were lines for Rosa’s signature.
Rosa had been cleaning my house for two years, and sometimes she brought Lily when child care fell through.

“Sign it,” she said.

Rosa stared at the page.
Lily stared at me.
That was when I saw her eyes.
My mother used to call mine storm glass.
Gray-green, deeper at the rim, lighter near the pupil, strange enough that strangers commented on them and close people stopped needing to.
Lily had the same eyes.
Not similar.

She blinked up at me with tears caught on her lashes, and some locked room in my chest opened before my mind could stop it.
“Is she hurt?” I asked.
My voice sounded far away.
Rosa checked Lily’s elbow, her wrist, the side of her head.
“I think she is okay,” she whispered.
Victoria gave a small, relieved laugh, not because the child was safe, but because she thought the danger to herself had passed.
It had not.
I stepped closer.
Lily leaned into Rosa but kept looking at me.
Children do not understand strategy, but they understand familiarity.

Then she asked it.
“Why do your eyes look like mine?”
Victoria dropped the pen.
It hit the marble and rolled once.
Rosa closed her eyes.

I turned to Rosa.
“How old is she?”
Rosa’s arms tightened around Lily.
“Three.”
I waited.
Her voice fell.

She spilled water on my sleeve.
I made a joke that was not funny.
She laughed anyway, but only after correcting the science metaphor I had used during my speech.
I liked her immediately, and that startled me.

“Is she mine?” I asked.

I was Lily’s father.

The first months were awkward.
I bought the wrong snacks and spoke to Lily like a tiny adult until she put one sticky hand over my mouth and said, “Too many words.”

Rosa watched me carefully.
